Forest Design

Planting 604 mixed hardwoods per acre
Our forest design interplants 302 mixed species hardwood seedlings and 302 eastern cottonwood cuttings on a 6’ by 12’ spacing for a total planting of 604 trees per acre. This planting of both fast growth and slow growth species creates and provides a variety of conservation and restoration benefits:

  • Establish a fast-growth, multiple-species forest
  • Create new wildlife habitats and corridors
  • Prevent soil erosion and runoff
  • Improve water quality
  • Sequester soil and above ground carbon
  • Restore wetlands
  • Increase aesthetics

The fast growing cottonwoods are reaching heights of 10-12 feet within the first planting season and immediately improving hardwood growth and form. GreenTrees created and led a team of regional foresters, consultants and research specialists, such as the US Forest Service Center for Bottomland Hardwood Research in Stoneville, MS, to ultimately produce this 302-302 interplanting for improving ecological and conservation outcomes. With over 3 Million trees planted and counting, we are restoring multiple benefits back into the land.

Enrolling our acres into GreenTrees was easy and given the income opportunities, it made perfect sense. It also feels good to know reforesting our land will have a positive impact on the environment.”

USDA Conservation Programs
Our 302-302 forest design has been approved by USDA as an acceptable conservation cover to be used in their federally-supported conservation programs such as Conservation Reserve Program (CRP); therefore, qualified landowners can simultaneously enroll in CRP and GreenTrees in CRP practices CP 31 (Bottomland Timber Establishment on Wetlands), CP 23 (Wetland Restoration Inside the 100 Year Floodplain) and CP 38 (SAFE: State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement).
