Mississippi Alluvial Valley

A LONG TERM ASSET

Change the way trees are valued.

As a global leader in reforestation and carbon asset management, our project to plant trees in one million acres of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) is bending the climate curve and changing the face of America’s Amazon.

The Multiple Benefits of Reforestation

Green Trees is working to make a difference in the MAV by driving large-scale reforestation efforts that can help restore the habitat of hundreds of wildlife species while bringing other untold benefits to the region and beyond. The Delta region is a vital ecosystem for 60% of all migrating birds and home to multiple endangered species.

  • Within seven years, a Green Trees forest will be home to twice as many migratory birds as a traditional reforestation project.
  • For every 1 acre of farmland that is reforested, 15.5 lbs of nitrogen and phosphorus will be kept out of the Mississippi River.
  • For every $1 million invested in forest management and reforestation projects, 39.7 jobs are created.

A Habitat for Biodiversity

The Mississippi River Valley (MAV), a vital habitat for migratory birds and numerous plant and animal species, “once supported 24 million acres of floodplain forest, swamps, sloughs and riverine habitat,” according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 40% of North America’s waterfowl and 60% of all bird species migrate along the Mississippi River, although their population has dwindled from habitat loss.

The MAV is now “the Southeast’s most deforested region. More than 75% of its forest has been lost since European settlement, mostly to agriculture, and much of the remnant forest occurs in small, isolated tracts of limited conservation value.”
